"Kate"
Background
Kate, a participant in our programme, had a chaotic home life with her mother in prison for firearm possession.
This led to significant emotional distress, resulting in constant truancy and a defensive demeanour.
Therapeutic Process
Kate's journey began with immersing her hands in clay and paint, which brought her relief.
She regularly created handprints and engaged in meditative processes, allowing her to express and process complex emotions safely.
Progress and Outcomes
Initially, Kate's artwork reflected her internal turmoil—messy and chaotic. Over time, her artwork transformed, reflecting her emotional journey from chaos to clarity. Her school attendance improved significantly, and she began to take pride in her schoolwork and art. During a final review, Kate expressed how making mess helped her process her feelings, creating a piece symbolising freedom—a hand releasing into a bright landscape. This artwork represented her emotional release and newfound sense of self.
Impact on Kate's Life
Kate's engagement with Breathing Space improved her attendance and behaviour at school, provided her with a therapeutic outlet
for her emotions, helped her build self-esteem, manage her anger, and find a sense of belonging.

Making art is pretty easy and I think I do better now. I’m dealing with it a bit more or it's more okay. Talking is hard. I think Breathing Space is different 'cause its kinda fun and I can just do it.

Before, I thought no way, I’m out. But there’s no pressure. To be honest, I was, I don’t know, I got into it. I'm getting better with stuff that used to stress me out. I don't get angry so fast. I also like learning some things, like I didn't know, so I like it.

I didn’t feel like there was a place for me. But we do these art work groups, and it’s not about what’s wrong—it’s just being me I guess. Learning about people and stories and feeling stronger I guess, and making friends, which is good for me.
